IN-SCHOOL RESIDENCY PROGRAM

Through classes in musical theater, TADA! provides students tools for successful group interaction and improved self-esteem. Classes are taught by two teaching artists (a director/choreographer and a music director) with extensive experience in music, theater, dance and education. Personal and creative growth takes place in a structured and supportive environment. Ensemble methods are taught to encourage cooperation and discourage competition. These classes provide a forum for creative and emotional expression, while developing concentration, discipline, teamwork, confidence and public speaking ability.

A variety of programs are available:

• MUSICAL THEATER SKILLS BUILDING – Students learn the skills necessary to participate as musical theater performers. Class begins with vocal exercises, acting games, stretching and dance. During the rest of class, students learn musical numbers that are drawn from TADA!'s repertoire of over 20 original musicals, which were written expressly for performance by children (or age-appropriate Broadway/Off-Broadway material). Material may be chosen around a topic or concept from the classroom teacher's curriculum so as to reinforce her/his teaching.
  
• MUSICAL THEATER WRITING RESIDENCY – Students learn the skills involved in writing, composing and performing an original musical. Under the guidance of professional writers and composers, students create the libretto and score for an original musical. Students then prepare to perform the piece. This residency incorporates the academic curriculum extensively. It may also allow students to explore important issues in their lives. Past scripts have focused on topics as varied as immigration, teamwork and drug prevention.
  
• LITERACY-INTEGRATED RESIDENCIES – Students use material being read in class to explore themes using drama, movement and song in preparation for an assembly program at the final session.
  
• PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMS - Classroom teachers learn how to incorporate theater arts, music and dance into their curriculum.
